1. Get in close. Your photo should identify you, so when it's a smaller thumbnail it should still visually remind people of you. While you may have had a lot of fun at the beach, seeing a tiny image of you there lacks identification in most cases.

2. Don't Mugshot. Straight on shots, with overhead direct lighting, unless done for that quirky effect, make people look like they have been put in prison. Shoot at more pleasing angles and will diffused lights to get out of jail.

3. Smile. People like smiles.

4. If you aren't going to show your face, show something interesting about you, or something you like.

Take these with a grain of salt. Rules were meant to be broken afterall!

iTerm delete key not backspacing and deleting?

iTerm got you down? Is the delete key not backspacing and deleting the left-most character (you get odd characters instead)?

Try this!

In the menu bar for iTerm, click Bookmarks -> Manage Profiles. Then click the arrow next to Keyboard Profiles. Click the profile you are using (might be xterm).

Double click on the Key Combination named "delete". Set the action to send hex code, and in the box, type: 8 (for some it might be 7f, try that if 8 doesn't work).

Click OK and test!

How to Make an Omelet

Here is what you need:
3 eggs
3 tbs. of milk
Omelet contents (cheese, bacon, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms or other favorite foods)

Prepare the contents of the omelet, shredding cheese, cooking bacon, cutting veggies and mushrooms, etc.

In a bowl, mix the eggs with milk until frothy.

Oil a skillet, I like to use some sort of non-stick skillet. Put the skillet on a medium to high heat and when it's hot put in the egg mixture.

Stir the mixture in the pan as it cooks with your spatula. Soon it will start to stick to itself and look troublesome with big holes in it. Not at all Omelet like. Tilt the pan to get the gooey egg to fill the holes. If there is more gooey egg on the top of the mass, lift a corner of the mass with the spatula and tilt the pan so the egg goes under the mass to the pan to cook. Repeat this, lifting at various spots on the mass of egg. Get fancy and try to make the thickness of the omelet even by filling in where needed.

Soon the top of the omelet will not have any goo that will move, it's time to flip the omelet.

One can use the spatula to flip the omelet. I have some success with this when I get all of the spatula under the omelet and move at a medium speed. Too fast and it will come apart, too slow, and it will come apart. Don't lift it to high.

I like to flip my omelet by tossing it from the pan back into the pan. This requires a pan you can easily lift, with a nice curved lip 1-2 inches tall. The flipping motion isn't hard to do, but there is a trick. First, get the omelet so it is slippery in the pan, it should slide freely, use the spatula as needed.

Then in one smooth medium speed motion push the pan forward (not up), about 6 inches. At the end of the motion lift the tip of the pan 2-4 inches. This causes the omelet to make like a wave and slide to the lip of the pan, lift up at the tip and flip over, curling in mid air, then landing back in the pan. Good luck.

Once the omelet is flipped, put the filling ingredients on one half. I like to fold the omelet almost right after the filling is in, so cheese can melt. Fold it, and turn it over after a minute or so to cook both sides evenly. Turn it as many times until it is cooked how you like.

Take it out, put more stuff on it: eat!

Someone I know, let's call him Dave, is having to deal with the DMCA; a particular page of his has been removed by his ISP, Pair Networks, because the University of Minnesota sent Pair Networks a DMCA take-down-notice.

If you read the page in question, you can see that Dave has been critical of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2. Apparently U of M sends out DMCA notices for any content associated with that particular personality test, even when the content is legal. It's probably a carpet bombing of DMCA takedown's, because sending out DMCA notices scares people into believing that we don't have the right to express our thoughts. I wonder if I will get a notice too. Hopefully Google will protect me better than Pair Networks did for Dave.

Dave filled a counter-notice letter with Pair Networks, and they chose to ignore it, so, Dave's page remains down, in spite of Dave's legal rights.

Guess Pair Networks doesn't have a pair.

AT&T and MMS

Once again, I'm plagued by AT&T's craptastic MMS workaround, viewmymessage.com.

Here is how it works, in theory:

1. Someone sends you an MMS message from their phone, say a text message with a photo in it.
2. AT&T saves the message on their viewmymessage.com website.
3. you get a message that says:
"I sent you a multimedia messages, you can view my message w/in the next 7 days via the web at: www.viewmymessage.com/2 using MSG ID yc0qw4e3d Password lob43bowl"
4. Now you can log into that site and get your message.

This might sound dandy to you, but here's why it sucks:

1. The MSG ID and password sometimes don't work, like what has happened to me today.
2. if you are on your iPhone you probably need to write down the MSG ID and password. So much for paperless technology. (cut and paste will only copy the whole message).
3. The MSG ID and Password contain characters that can be font-ambiguous, like g,q,l,1,0,O, and o
4. You can't get a copy of the MMS message, so you can't keep the video or photo for on your iPhone. I haven't seen a download button for this.

Solutions:
1. Start out with an "advanced" phone that can do MMS, a feature you get in any simple phone now.
2. If you must workaround, provide a URL link that is unique, obscured and provides the same sort of protection an ID and password would -- so I don't have to remember type in a ID and Password.
3. allow me to copy the content to my phone, so I can save my friend's photos.

iTerm fires off X11 when using SSH (solved)

I've been trying to figure out why every time I use iTerm to ssh to a machine X11 starts. It slows down the whole login process, and is annoying because then X11 has focus, not iTerm.

I finally found it in my ~/.ssh/config file:

ForwardX11 yes

Commented that out and now it's not firing up X11. Not sure when I set that up, might have been as an experiment to see how someone else's setup worked.

I downloaded a php program recently, and tried to run it. It gave me this sort of error:

I used cat to investigate:

So, I visit my buddy in Oregon and we decide to get some Coke squishies -- that's what we call slurpees, squeebies, mushies, frappes, freezies or what you prefer to call them. We liked how the Simpson's named them -- squishies. We know I will need the sugar and caffeine to keep up with our planned late night conversation – especially with my friend being Captain Graveyard-up-all-Night.

Everything is going fine, the squishy machine dispenses two beautifully textured American super-sized beverages -- I suppose this is when we should have seen The-First-Signs. Traditionally, if you look wrong at a sqishie machine they give you some sloppy watery mess, and getting two perfect squishies from the same machine, within the same hour, on the same day, well, it is truly some sort of miracle.

We get to the counter. We ante up our drinks on the counter, and toss in some snacks to raise the bid. I think I tossed one extra thing into the pile from an impulse-buy rack at the counter -- I'm sure that is what started the chain-reaction. The woman behind the counter rings everything up, and I hold out my Ten-spot. She just looks at me like some sort of cow with a train barreling down on her and won't touch the bill.

"You Sure you don't want Something more?" she says with a chilling tone of doom.

Then it was my turn to look like a soon to be meat on the grill. I'm not sure what my buddy was thinking at this time, I glanced over and his expression pretty much matched my own. My brain clicked a few more times then sent me the answer:

"Look, don't be such a corporate drone, just give me the squishes and the candy, I don't need a damn lottery ticket, or what-ever your sales-addled-brain is thinking I need to buy".

Of course, instead I said, "Uh, no, this is fine, thanks". Smile.

Her eyes just got bigger, "Are you Sure? You could just add in some jerky or something -- it’s only like-a-dollar", she waved some jerky about to demonstrate how cheap it was.

My brain exploded. The characters “WTF?” scrolled blinking across my monitor. Something triggered my fight or flight system, my blood-pressure rose, my heart-rate elevated, blood rushed to my head to feed my brain. Time compressed. My mind suddenly begins the complex math needed to resolve freaky social conditions; it struggled mostly with different reasons why anyone would possibly be pushing jerky tonight. Is this some piss-poor signal that we are standing in the middle of a hold up? Is she making some rude sexual joke by waving around dried meat? Is this some code for buying drugs at 7-11? Is this to make figuring out taxes easier? Are they paying commission on jerky sales at 7-11? Why is jerky only a dollar in Oregon?

It felt like a minute passed with me staring at her, and then I realized she was pointing at the cash register read-out with the jerky treat.

It read: $6.66

“Are you Sure?” she pleaded, "I can't be held responsible... "

After a deep breath, I told her, as nicely as I could, that I didn’t believe in old myths. She complained, but wiped her hands clean of the event and sold me my devil-treats. I could almost feel her making some old curse gesture behind our backs as we left, tossing some salt over her shoulder, and then cleaning the register with the blood of a calf born under a full moon, you know, just to make sure.

My buddy and I later agreed that things might have gone differently if she had said, “I’m going to give you one of the squishies free, to avoid the wrath of the beast”. With the prospect of free a squishy, neither of us would have blinked an eye.

I was out shopping tonight and ran into a couple of cool dudes running the shop I was in. We chatted about how best to take care of a wound. I was doing the regular Eagle Scout routine, explaining changing a bandage a couple of times a day for a few days and how fast you heal. One of the other guys suggested that leaving it out in the rough was good. I think he was implying that would make you tougher. Reminded me of "what doesn't kill you...", not a bad theory either.

In the Deepest of Darkness

As children my brother and I were trained to be a ninjas. This training wasn't intentional. It was effective none the less.

Father worked nights through a long period of our ninja training. He'd work in the dark of night while his family rested; when he came home, we'd awake, beginning our day of work and play. I was told his job was "night watchman" and that he worked at the wood mill. I later came to realize this was just a cover. Certainly he was out practicing the dark Ninja arts while we all slept. The world was a terrifying place. My Father was at the heart of this terror.

Unfortunately for my family, Father's sense of hearing, at the time, was spectacular. During those long years when he worked nights you could drop the smallest objects, make a door squeak in the next room over, or dare to whisper to each other and he'd not only hear it, but he would leap from bed, stomping about like a giant; then, with a voice that would strike fear and paralysis of the body and the heart, he'd bellow,

"What's going on in there"?

Thus, my brother and I were soon in training. We were learning to move across the squeakiest of floors, navigating slowly and carefully around the dangerously loud spots as if we were crossing a minefield. We were becoming educated in the ways to open and close doors so that they might not squeak or bump in the slightest (the trick to this is to turn the knob slowly and all the way, followed by lifting firmly on the knob while pushing the door open smoothy, thus stopping most squeaks). If we dropped something, even the most dangerous objects such as a knife, hammer, or bowling ball, a foot would swoop under it, our hands grasping to muffle the "ouch" that would follow as it's impact was muffled by our tender toes.

We were soon startling cats with our silent way. We dropped nothing that wasn't foot-juggled silently to the floor. Our tiny feet could cross across rice paper and leave no mark. We hovered instead of walking. The slightest breeze was louder than our very step. We moved like ninjas.

This wasn't enough. Of course we still couldn't navigate well in the dark. Father fixed that as well. His sense of mischievousness was unparalleled in my world. The number of times he snuck about in the dark and scared us probably matches the number of stars in the dark night sky. No one was excused from these attacks, and there seemed no way to become immune to being scared. We tried. We trained ourselves by sneaking about and scaring each other. We learned to maintain our facial expressions, how to keep from jumping at loud noises. It was never enough. Each time my Father leapt from the dark there was a scream. Each time he growled from the dark you'd find your face scrunched in horror. It is my belief that over the years he calculated an exacting methodology of fright, so that just as you imagined there was no way he could possibly scare you again, he'd increase his effort in some slight way so that you were just as frightened as the last time. Only a Ninja has such skill.

I remember a time the family was watching television in the evening. It was dark. There was one light on in the house; we were forbidden the comfort of a well lit home because Father wasn't made of money. A commercial came about and my little brother, no more than 3 or 4, got up and trotted down the long dark hall to the bathroom. I noted his tiny pajama bottomed feet making scarce a sound, already his Ninja training was in effect; but, being older than he, I knew his training was no where near complete.

Father got up the very moment the bathroom door shut. Silent as a rolling cotton ball he moved down the hall and slipped into the first room, the room my brother and I shared. The television show came back on, but I was transfixed at the horror that was about to unfold. My mother sat eating popcorn, pleasantly oblivious to what was coming. I remember wondering what exactly she thought my Father got up to do. Did she think that his iron clad "we aren't stopping this car until we get there" bladder needed to be relieved this early in the evening? Didn't she wonder why he went down the hall, instead of in to the kitchen, to get his next beer? Didn't she see him slip into our room? To this day I believe she simply never even noticed Father was gone from beside her, until it happened.

I heard a flush. The door to the bathroom opened, light spilled out, the tiny elongated shadow of my brother appeared briefly before the light went off, land then the hallway was pitch black. What a fool I thought he was being. Opening the door before turing off the light was dumb, it was a signal that he was on the move. Why did he use the bathroom light at all? Hadn't he figured out that the nightlight was adequate, that it didn't leave you night blind, thus vulnerable to attack? Also, there was no way he had washed his hands between flushing and the door opening. I looked to Mother, she sat crunching and said nothing.

He came into view in the darkness, head down, humming a happy tune, his little feet pumping -- completely unaware. My eyes tried to shut but I was too full of fear, they would not close -- I trembled.

I turned my head and winced in anticipation of my Father's legendary growl, his swift relentless Ninja hands reaching out for vulnerable ribs, the screaming, the dreaded tickling that would nearly induce one to wet themselves.

"Well", I thought, "at least he's just come from the bathroom".

My eyes nearly closed I watched. Nothing happened, at least not right away. No hands, no shit inducing bellow, just the near silent pattering of little feet, just the happy little tune, just my little brother's grin. I had hope. He was going to make it.

Then my little brother stopped. He turned as if he heard something. I watched, thoughtless, in terror. His little head cocked to the side, like an innocent pup that hears something curious. I heard it then. It was a quiet scraping noise. The smallest of things, yet it froze me in my place. It grew louder, then stopped. My breath held for a small eternity. Then, peered into the room, seeing something out of my sight, my frightened and tender little brother, amazingly, stepped forward.

There was no growl.

I beheld the dreaded hands jetting out of the dark and grabbing his miniscule torso. A nearly whispered "Gotcha!" reached my ears just moments before an unearthly scream boiled from my brother. His little body vented with a shrill whistle as he collapsed like a popped balloon. He pedaled backwards, looking like a strange inverted crab he careened supersonically, banging down the hall towards my Mother and I. As he came shrieking past us we lifted our feet up onto the couch. He rocketed backwards, nearly out of sight into the dark kitchen, his face contorted; eyes crazed and wide; his mouth encompassing the rest of the space left on his face. Endless high pitched air streamed from his little lungs as he disappeared into the dark.

I of course did only what any older brother could. I pointed and laughed.

All of this training couldn't prepare us for the consternation Father would release upon us over the years; yet, it often came in handy through childhood. Even as an adult I still feel the persistence of our Ninja schooling. A night doesn't pass that I don't want to reach out of the dark and grab some poor unsuspecting friend. I barely resist. I stand still in the silent knowledge that the world doesn't need any more people to be trained as Ninjas. There are plenty Ninjas in the world, always ready to congeal the blood with a supernatural sound, always willing you to step just one more foot into the shadows, always waiting for the moment you breathe that sigh of relief, always lurking in the deepest of darkness.

Remove Verizon Signature

This is a photo I sent to my blog using my cell phone. I was upset that my Verizon service was adding a text signature to the posts made with my cell phone. It started: "This message was sent using the Picture and Video Messaging service..." blah blah blah and had a mess of links to Verizon's sites.

I think this is spamdexing. I'm not happy about it.

To get rid of it, when you type a message on your phone, add: #end

Adding #end apparently strips #end and anything that follows in your message, including any spammy signatures.

Still Seeking Unity and Experience

Imagine a world in which a simple vending machine could dispense - not Coca-Cola - but the ESSENCE of Coca-Cola: refreshment, joy, unity, experience.

Imagine me eating my sour grapes while I teleported about Second Life forever clicking on each coke bottle puzzle to see what you get for solving the puzzle, besides of course the beginnings of RSI.

I was largely unimpressed. The coke parachute and scooter are fun but not very original; the penguin fishing snow globe and shoulder worn bear were cute, if you are into cute; the snowball machine and guitar weren't bad though.

Even though Second Life has parachutes, scooters, skateboards, guitars, and things you can toss at each other (my favorite, the lemming discharging gun!), I can overlook the lack of originality -- it's hard to be completely original.

However, I didn't feel compelled to share any of these experiences with anyone, thus, they are lacking unity and experience.

The grapes taste a little sweeter now; I think I'll see if I can stuff the little bear into my lemmings gun.

Google Apps

I seem to have made the transition over to Google Apps. I'm not perfectly happy with the move, but it's free, what can I say?

It appears that email is working fine, so I can get email to ken@beyondred.com. This was one of the two goals I had with the move to Google, the blog being the other.

I had to put the blog at: http://blog.beyondred.com/ because I wanted to play with some of the Google Apps. This meant I really needed a www location, so that the antiquated http://www.beyondred.com would work. I made the DNS changes needed, not sure if it's broken or just not propagated yet -- time will tell.

I'm betting that Google will integrate more applications into Google Apps, including Blogger. So, maybe future moves will be easier. Hopefully sooner than later!
